Post and Beam Construction

The Tradition of Post & Beam

Post and beam construction is a time honored tradition using vertical posts joined to horizontal beams. The heavy skeletal framework is exposed, revealing the natural beauty of the wood.  Visually, post and beam resembles timber frame except for the method of joining the beams and posts together.  Similar to Timber Frame structures in overall rustic feel, post and beam structures are strong and stable. These structures are fire retardant due to the thickness of the wood components, and can stand for hundreds of years. This method of building fastens heavy timber framework with mortise and tenon joinery. Post & beam is a construction modality which relies on high-grade heavy timbers to create beautifully open interiors. It is safe to say that this style of homes, garages, barns, outbuildings and sheds are popular today because of their stability and longevity.

Post and Beam is a traditional method of building that dates back to the Orient. The hallmark of this style of building fabrication is exposed timber, a central element of the building’s profile.  These structures can be erected relatively quickly due to their lack of load-bearing walls. With fewer constraints on structural requirements, post and beam construction lends itself to highly customizable floor plans—meaning windows, doors, and horse stalls can be added almost anywhere the owner sees fit. This method of construction is comparatively uncommon, likely a result of high material costs and a general lack of understanding by contractors.

Post and beam buildings are known for their strength and stability. They are often the only structures that remain standing in the aftermath of hurricanes and earthquakes.

The use of large timbers in post and beam construction means fewer support beams are needed, thus creating dramatically open interior spaces. Exposed beams and wooden interiors lend a warm and airy essence of natural elegance to the building. Country Carpenters of Hebron Connecticut provides pre-cut building kits for all types of rustic post and beam buildings. We have shipped these kits all over the world.  Call (860) 228-2276 for more information.
